A long time ago I realized I hated setting goals in January. As I look back I realize that setting New Year’s resolutions were often shame based and ultimately those never have staying power. So, for the past several years I set goals during the month of June!
Why the month of June is better to plan your year’s goals.
-
Vacations give better reflection time
- Being away from work usually gives perspective you normally don’t have in the thick of it.
-
No nostalgia or regret based goals
- Here again, I feel we shouldn’t make goals based on the shame of not living up to something. Also, this removes the motivation to set something new in place just because the calendar year changed. This numerical progression truly is arbitrary if you think about it and shouldn’t really be a motivation to set a goal.
-
End of most business fiscal years
- If your setting a goal for an organization, usually budgets dictate much of what should be planned. Most organizations I know of July 1 is the beginning of a new fiscal year, so May June seems like a great time to talk about the future.
