The new album, Sunlight, is getting some great reviews. Here is one of my favorites, via Facebook:
While we worked on Anna’s room tonight, Chrystal and I listened to Robert Payne’s new solo album, “Sunlight.” I expected it to be good, but it completely exceeded my expectations, and actually got even better with subsequent listens. Who knew “that guitar player guy from Poetshaker and Drag Of Gravity” could sing? Well, apparently *he* did. So can his wife, Monna Clare Payne, whose guest vocal spot on “Fireflies” works perfectly and really enhances the song.
Front to back, the album is impressive and, well… fun. The vocals remind me of Jakob Dylan, which is a compliment coming from me. The songwriting is solid, and the instrumentation is a particular highlight. I know Rocky Searan played a part in both. Also, I really liked having such a wide variety of song styles which still make a cohesive album. That’s probably my favorite part: this is a solid *album* rather than just a bunch of songs. That’s something that seems to be missing from a lot of music anymore.
Anyway, well done Rob and Co.! I see myself listening to this a lot in the near future.
