Last week I summed up the necessary skills every worship leader needed in order to be successful: Pastoral, Administrative, Musical, and Creative. But what happens when you lack in one of these skills? What happens if you SIGNIFICANTLY lack in one of these skills?
Here are a few ideas:
-delegate. Search for people who have different skill sets than you. Often they are volunteers and they are right under your nose. You need to ask them.
– Seek Mentors in your weak areas. Ask another pastor or worship leader (maybe an older one, maybe not though) to have regular meetings with you. Or converse with you via email. Don’t waste their time by droning on and on about philosophical rhetoric about church this and that. Stick to solid practical questions that you have prepared in advance.
– Learn music for real: Practice CONSTANTLY. Take lessons. Do something that puts you in front of honest academic critique.
– Creatively Borrow. Nothing is new under the sun, so don’t worry about taking ideas, new songs or anything for that matter from other churches. Just don’t copy and paste, what works fully for one church doesn’t work for another. You can’t “re-create” the experience. God leads you alone in that respect.
