For years now church worship music has relied on 2 rock bands for the “sound” they attempt to emulate. The influences of U2 and Coldplay are the most recognizable in the music of Chris Tomlin, Charlie Hall, and Mercy Me (and countless others). In fact, this is regularly flaunted, as Chris Tomlin’s guitarist was quoted, “If it isn’t on a U2 record, its not going on ours”
Well, that being the case, lets talk delay, or rather two delays. The U2 sound, the “high chime” The Edge produces, comes from two digital delay rack effect unit sources, set to two different tempos. Namely, the TC Electronic 2290 and the Korg SDD-3000 (along with the VOX amps, fender blues Jr, strat and the elusive “shimmer,” that we’ll cover in Part 2.)
Here is specific reading on the subject:

I wanted to include all the “options” so for you church guitarists, you can see what is out there. here is a delay shoot out:
Personally, I think the TC Electronic Nova Delay is the way to go for those wanting to get that U2 sound on a budget, however it is not MIDI controllable, so that is a little anti-The Edge it seems to me 😉
